Data processing in the Oogje app

Data processing in the Oogje app

When you use the Oogje app, we process the data required to make the app work properly and securely. This includes account details of the parent/guardian, such as name and email address, information about child profiles, such as name, chosen avatar and year/month of birth, and settings for screen time, notifications and rewards.

Oogje does not ask for the child’s full date of birth, only the year and month of birth. This information is needed to show the appropriate age-related guidance and recommendations within the app.

In addition, Oogje processes data about how the app is used, such as screen time sessions started, break moments, daily checks, sticker rewards and invitations for other adults who are given access to a child profile. For notifications, we may process device data such as device type, operating system, app version, push token and notification preferences.

This data is used to provide the features of Oogje, including managing child profiles, guiding screen time and breaks, displaying and sending notifications, keeping track of rewards and securing access to the app. We do not use this data for advertising and we do not sell it to third parties.

Storage

The technical storage and processing of Oogje data takes place through the systems of the app and the technical service providers engaged for this purpose. They process data solely for the purpose of providing, securing, maintaining and improving the app. Personal data is only stored or processed outside the European Economic Area where this complies with the GDPR and appropriate safeguards are in place.

Deleting data

You can delete your account entirely via the Oogje app. To do so, go to your account in the app and choose “Delete account”. Once confirmed, your account and all associated data are permanently deleted and cannot be restored. You can also delete child profiles individually. When an account or child profile is deleted, the associated data is deleted, unless we are required to retain certain data for longer because of a legal obligation, security, error handling or administrative settlement.

Retention period

We do not keep Oogje data for longer than is necessary for the use of the app and the purposes described above. Data required for the functioning of an active account or child profile is retained for as long as that account or child profile exists. Technical log data and back-ups are retained for a limited period and are then deleted or overwritten in line with the applicable retention periods of our technical systems.

Scientific research

If you give consent in the app to take part in scientific research, app data may be used for research into viewing behaviour, screen use and eye development in children. This scientific research is carried out by Erasmus MC. Participation is voluntary and you decide for yourself whether or not to take part. Any additional data requested outside Oogje by Erasmus MC is covered by the privacy statement and research conditions of Erasmus MC.

Legal bases for processing

  • Contract: the processing is necessary in order to provide you with the Oogje app and its associated features. This applies, for example, to creating and managing an account, child profiles, screen time sessions, break moments, daily checks and rewards.
  • Legitimate interest: the processing is necessary to keep the app working properly, securely and reliably. This applies, for example, to security, troubleshooting, technical maintenance, preventing misuse and improving how the app works.
  • Consent: for certain elements we ask for separate consent. This applies, for example, to receiving push notifications on your device and to voluntary participation in scientific research.
  • Legal obligation: in some cases processing may be necessary in order to comply with legal obligations that apply to Oogfonds.
